Directions:

With the 10 1/2 circular knitting needles, cast on 60 stitches, join and begin knitting in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Work 8 inches, alternating a row of knit and a row of purl, for garter stitch.

Decrease as follows. (When there are not enough stitches remaining to work on the circular needle, place stitches [evenly divided] on three double pointed needles):

Row 1:  (Knit 8, Knit 2tog) repeat 6 times (54 stitches).
Row 2 and all even rows: Purl.
Row 3:  (Knit 7, Knit 2tog) repeat 6 times (48 stitches).
Row 5:  (Knit 6, Knit 2 tog) repeat 6 times (42 stitches).
Row 7:  (Knit 5, Knit 2tog) repeat 6 times (36 stitches).
Row 9:  (Knit 4, Knit 2tog) repeat 6 times (30 stitches).
Row 11: (Knit 3, Knit 2tog) repeat 6 times (24 stitches).
Row 13: (Knit 2, Knit 2tog) repeat 6 times (18 stitches).
Row 15: (Knit 1, Knit 2tog) repeat 6 times (12 stitches).
Row 17: (Knit 2tog) repeat 6 times (6 stitches).
Row 18: Knit even.

Cut yarn leaving 12" tail. Thread tail through remaining 6 stitches, and pull tight. Bring tail to the inside of the hat and weave in. Wear hat with brim folded up.
