This hat fits comfortably up to 22” head circumference.

Ch 4.  Join to form a ring.
Row 1: Ch 2, 11 hdc in ring, join. (12 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in joining ch, 2 hdc in each st around, join. (24 hdc)
Row 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * around,
            join. (36 hdc)
Row 4: Ch 2, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st,
       repeat from * around, join. (48 hdc)
Row 5: Ch 2, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st,
       repeat from * around, join. (60 hdc)
Row 6: Ch 2, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 4 sts,
       2 hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join.
       (72 hdc)
Rows 7-15: Ch 2, hdc around, join.
Row 16: Ch 5, dtr around, join.
Row 17: Ch 2, hdc around, join.
Row 18: Ch 1, sc in joining st, sk 1 st, 5 hdc in next st, sk 1 st,
       *sc in next st, sk 1 st, 5 hdc in next st, sk 1 st,
       repeat from * around, join, fasten off yarn and hide ends.
       (18 shells)

Thread the scarf through the double triple round in multiples of 4 stitches.  Tie in a double knot.

Note: You may need to adjust the number of rows before row 16 in order to get the hat the right length. These instructions were written by someone who crochets rather loosely.
